Melbourne’s northern suburbs are set to receive a significant boost in mental health services with the delivery of a new Statewide Child and Family Centre and expanded mental health beds at the Northern Hospital, representing a major investment in community health infrastructure that addresses critical service gaps in one of the city’s fastest-growing regions. The Victorian Government has invested $7.3 million to deliver the Statewide Child and Family Centre in Melbourne’s north, a Victorian-first facility that will improve access to mental health services for children up to 11 years of age in a safe and supportive residential setting. The new 12-bed centre will allow children and their families to stay onsite while they receive flexible, family-centred therapy and support from child and family mental health specialists, providing a comprehensive approach to mental health care that addresses the needs of the whole family unit. The centre will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ensuring that children and families have access to support whenever they need it, reflecting the government’s commitment to accessible mental health services. This investment addresses a critical gap in mental health services for young children, who have historically been underserved compared to older age groups, and represents an important step toward comprehensive mental health care across the lifespan. In addition to the new child and family centre, the Mental Health Beds Expansion Program has delivered 30 mental health beds at the Northern Hospital in Epping, increasing capacity and reducing pressure on emergency departments across Melbourne’s northern suburbs. The delivery of the project will increase capacity, reduce pressure on emergency departments, and provide extra support for people experiencing mental illness who need immediate treatment, in a contemporary, safe, and high-quality setting that meets modern standards of care. The expanded mental health beds at the Northern Hospital will provide essential inpatient services for adults experiencing acute mental health crises, ensuring that residents of Melbourne’s northern suburbs have access to timely and appropriate care when they need it most. The mental health infrastructure investment is part of a broader commitment by the Victorian Government to transform mental health services across the state, responding to the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System. The investments in Melbourne’s northern suburbs are particularly significant given the region’s rapid population growth and the historical underinvestment in health infrastructure compared to more established parts of the city. In addition to these investments, the government has also committed to the $515.7 million upgrade of Thomas Embling Hospital, which will deliver an additional 82 secure mental health beds and help transform Victoria’s forensic mental health system. The Thomas Embling Hospital is a secure forensic mental health hospital, providing care and treatment for people living with a serious mental illness in, or at risk of entering, the justice system, representing a critical component of Victoria’s mental health infrastructure. The mental health investments in Melbourne’s northern suburbs have been welcomed by community leaders and health advocates, who have long campaigned for improved mental health services in the region.
