Melbourne service advice is only useful when it points to the right council and current process. Use this checklist to verify a City of Melbourne notice or request before acting. It does not replace the council’s own instructions.
1. Check which council covers the location
The Victorian Government’s Know Your Council profile for Melbourne describes the City of Melbourne area and links to council information. A Melbourne postal address or familiar suburb name alone does not establish that a property or service belongs to this council. Confirm the location against the official council boundary and service page before following an article’s advice.
2. Match the task to an official channel
The City of Melbourne online services portal separates applications, property enquiries, customer service requests, payments and pet registration. Open the category that matches your task, then read the current instructions on that official page. Do not assume one form, fee or eligibility rule applies to every request.
3. Distinguish a consultation from an active service
Participate Melbourne lists council consultation projects and their status. A consultation page can explain a proposal or feedback window; it is not itself proof that a proposed service has begun. Check the page’s date, status, affected location and any linked final decision before repeating a claim as current policy.
4. Record the version you relied on
For a decision or application, note the official URL, the page’s update or closing date where shown, the relevant council area and the date you checked it. If those details are missing or conflict, ask the council through its official channel before paying or submitting personal information. Avoid relying on an undated social post or a copied form.
