The City of Melbourne is asking for feedback on a new Climate and Environment Strategy until 7 October 2026. This is a pre-draft consultation. The council has not, on the evidence of the official project page, adopted the proposed strategy yet. Residents who want to contribute should use the current project page to confirm the deadline and participation options before submitting anything.
What the consultation covers
The City says it wants to bring climate and environment priorities that currently sit across separate plans into a direction for the next decade. It is asking what matters most to Melburnians before preparing a draft strategy and implementation plans. A request for ideas is evidence that the city is considering priorities, not that a particular measure has been approved or funded.
The project page links to a feedback survey and information about pop-up sessions. Check those links directly for the current form, location or availability. We have not independently confirmed that any particular session still has capacity or that a submitted response will receive an individual reply.
The dates to keep separate
- 12 August–7 October 2026: pre-draft consultation on priorities.
- October–December 2026: planned analysis of feedback and drafting.
- Early 2027: planned presentation of a draft strategy to Council.
- February–March 2027: planned consultation on the draft.
- Mid-2027: planned presentation of a final strategy to Council.
These are the City’s published timeline dates as checked on 2 October 2026; they can change. The project page should be the reference for the latest status.
What a useful response can address
The council says the first stage is about residents’ values, priorities and ideas for the environment. An evidence-led response can identify a specific place or issue, explain who is affected, and separate a desired outcome from a suggested action. That is an editorial suggestion for making feedback clearer, not a council requirement. Avoid treating a survey choice or discussion prompt as a guarantee of future policy.
If a claim about the proposed strategy appears in a social post or a secondary article, compare it with the official project overview: is the item a current consultation topic, an actual draft measure, or an adopted decision? The difference will be especially important after the 7 October feedback deadline and when a draft appears in 2027.
This article reports the council’s stated process, not an endorsement of a particular climate measure.
